VMware vROps upgrade to 7.5

Out of the VMware Eco system, I think vROps has the most efficient upgrade process with the help of Assessment tool.
Assessment tool helps vROps administrators to analyze which are the affected Metrics/MP/Reports/View before even the upgrade is performed.

Here is my attempt:

• To share some useful tips I used while upgrading vROps 7.0 to vROps 7.5.
• Highlighting the benefit of Assessment tool.
• Showcase quick upgrade process of vROps.

Assessment Tool: You must use this tool to analyze the impact of upgrade on existing version of vROps in reference to metrics. As with each version metrics are Modified, deleted and added. follow the KB for more details.

Download the Assessment tool and VA upgrade .PAK file from VMware website.

2. Checking the release notes is highly recommended as some of very important points as mentioned their like:

a) “Upgrading to vRealize Operations Manager 7.5, resets out-of-the-box content as part of the software upgrade process even if the Reset Default Content button is unchecked during the upgrade. This implies that the user modifications made to default content such as alert definitions, symptom definitions, recommendations, policies, views, dashboards, widgets, and reports are overwritten. You need to clone or backup the content before you upgrade to vRealize Operations Manager 7.5.”

b) If you are upgrading from 6.6 or 6.7 to latest release, a new license Key is required except vSOM Enterprise Plus. The tool will be in evaluation mode (60-days) until a new valid license key ids added.

c) If your environment is using IPv6, check the list of known issues as well before upgrade.

3. I would recommend to take a snapshot of all nodes of vROps in the cluster before the upgrade and once successfully patched remove them.

Let’s Start with Assessment tool:

Step 1: Login to HTTPS://vRops_IP/admin

Click -> Software Update -> Install a Software update (Click and browser for .PAK file)

Upload the .PAK file.

Click Next -> Accept the EULA & Next -> Next (Update information) -> Install.

Once the installation is completed, on the Software Update Page -verification can be done.

Step 2:  Now we can check the report generated in support buddle.

Support -> Support Bundles -> download the light bundle created by the assessment tool.

After downloading and extracting the zip file, navigate to

apuat-data/report/index.html.

Open Index.html in any browser.

In snp06 & snp07, we can see the impacts on the components due to this upgrade. This reflects the impacted metrics and Managements packs as well.

Note: If in the impact analysis any metrics is renamed or depreciated, check which is the other alternate available and save yourself from any surprises later.

Now, we are ready to upgrade the vROps:

 Step 1: Login to HTTPS://vRops_IP/admin

Software Update -> Install a Software update (upload the .PAK file)

Click Next -> Accept the EULA & Next -> Next (Update information) -> Install

Note: During installation you might see Error 404 temporarily on browser, don’t panic vROps will be back soon.

Login to HTTPS://vRops_IP/ui

On the home screen, you can see the goodness of vROps 7.5.
