vSphere Assessment Tool (vSAT)

While planning upgrade of Production vSphere Environment, i had multiple doubts regarding ESXi hosts support:
1) What about HBA cards?
2) Support metric of NIC card and CPU models ?

So by the power invested in me by google, i came across this amazing tool which gives complete insight of vSphere environment called vSphere Assessment Tool (vSAT).

Best part, it can be used from a system which has connectivity to vSphere environment like your laptop. No need of any VM deployment.

Before you get all excited, ensure you have access to your MYVmware account, if not you have to register. Go to the official link and sign in/register.

Post login it will show the option to download the utility , click -> Download

Choose your convenient OS based binary

Install the downloaded binary on your laptop.

Post install of the binary a vCenter registration wizard will open.

Add the vCenter instances you want to connect to with a user which has either a custom user role with “Host Settings” privileges, or an administrator account.

Multiple vCenter can be added and data collection will be performed for all on them in 1 attempt itself.

Click on RUN DATA COLLECTION, with in few mins (Depending on the size of infrastructure) it will complete.

Click Proceed to upload the analysis from your laptop to assessment tool website.
Their are 2 methods for it:
1) Online upload or 2) Save Data File .
Just for demo purpose i am using Save Data File option.
Return to Assessment URL and click Upload

Upload the file from your system and wait for the analysis to complete. Post completion it will reflect the vCenter instances added.

Now we can start on ESXi host analysis, by clicking on the host details.

We can expand and have a detailed view of Server, Storage devices , Network devices.

Conclusion: Using this all the detailed devices information can be fetched and plan accordingly to patch any device before upgrade of ESXi host.
