A new way of taking backup vCSA was introduced in vSphere 6.5 “File-Based Backups “
using protocols of HTTP/HTTP,FTP/FTPS and SCP. This backup can be used to restore healthy vCSA.
But this feature never felt complete as Scheduling this backup action was not possible OOB. We can always using script to perform but OOB it was not available.
Below we can see the configuration of taking backup manually.
Very first thing i noticed with vSphere 6.7 was, vCSA now supports scheduling of File-Based Backups – OOB.
In this post we will see, how easy it’s to schedule the backup.
How to configure the Schedule?
To take File-Based Backups, we need to login HTTPS://IP_of_VCSA:5480 and click on backup page as shown in Screenshot – 2.
Click on BACKUP NOW to take the backup, and if you want to
Click on CONFIGURE to schedule.
In the Screenshot-3, the scheduling page we can see the configuration required.
There are 2 additional configuration required, let’s talk about them:
Configuration 1: Schedule
Default configuration is Daily@ 11:59PM according to your selected timezone.
This can be modified as per the organization requirement or policy.
Configuration 2: Number of Backups to Retain
This is the retention policy of the no of backups to retain.
This can be modified as per the organization requirement or policy.
Conclusion:
In my personal experience, i have found “File-Based BackupsĀ ” more reliable and efficient. With the addition of Scheduling feature it makes it more convenient to use.
In Next post, we will talk about using restore option of vCSA using the taken File based backup!
