Disable vSphere HA for a Virtual Machine!

Now you must be thinking, why am i writing about such a small and common topic which is widely covered by many bloggers.
Reason: i was looking for after effects of disabling HA to a VM! didn’t find anyone mentioning about that. (Maybe i didn’t look hard enough)

First, lets disable HA for a VM and then later we will talk about the after effects!

Navigate to Cluster -> Configuration -> VM Overrides
VM Overrides is used to override the propagating configuration for HA and DRS from cluster to any VM which has special requirements.

Figure 1: Add VM into Overrides configuration

Click on the + sign to add the VM in the list:

Figure 2: Select the VM from the list

Final set of configuration:

figure 3: disable the VM restart priority

Now the configuration is completed, let’s talk about after effects or conclusion:
If the ESXi host fail which is hosting this VM,
1) The VM is migrated to any other host in the same cluster but its not powered on. The VM remains in Powered off state unless powered on manually.
2) If in case you want to restrict this migration, then create a affinity rule between ESXi host and VM.

Hope this is helpful.
