vCD 9.7 deployment errors and Solutions.

While deploying vCD 9.7 appliance, i encountered some silly and some eye opening errors.
The idea behind this blog is to share those errors and how to find exactly what caused the error.
Without wasting any time let’s directly jump into it.

Problem: vCD UI would not start post appliance was deployed successful !

This is very generic, it may be caused by anything. So here i will try to walk you through the steps to check -> what exactly caused the issue.
The 1st place to check is /opt/vmware/var/log/firstboot

Figure 1: Error message states the vCD script execution failed.
For which the reason/cause is still unknown. As mentioned in Figure 1, For more details we need to check another file -> /opt/vmware/var/log/vcd/setupvcd.log

Figure 2: Shows the empty transfer directory (NFS folder) was successfully accessed which matches the deployment requirement of Primary cell and DB connection was also successful.
Hence, Setup configuration of Primary vCD cell and Postgres DB was successful but FirstRUNWizard failed.
To check which property caused this failure, let’s check the final Spot:
 /opt/vmware/var/log/vcd/Firstrunwizard.log

Figure 3: Sadly i had to go through all this because while deploying the appliance i didn’t mention the email address of the vCD admin.

Conclusion:

All the fields while deploying the appliance is required other than the “Additional Networking Routes”.



Following were the additional reasons to failure note :
1) Ensure the transfer directory (NFS folder) is put as per the given format (X.X.X.X:/Folder_Name)
2) transfer directory (NFS folder) needs to be empty (if its primary cell deployment)
3) DNS – (A) record entries for the eth0 IP is must
4) System Name should be as per DNS record
5) eth0 and eth1 should be on seperate networks. (This problem you will not face unless you deploy Standby cells).
