Most Active VM for “Total IOPs Per Datastore Cluster” !

While preparing for an activity of Storage Controllers replacement by storage admins asked me to provide a list of most active VM’s in a datastore cluster!

Whenever such a requirement comes, my first step is to check default dashboards and reports in vROPs. This time i was not so lucky, had to create a custom dashboard but i was not reaching logic as i was trying to find TOP-N on a DS Cluster prospective.

Then i reached out to community over twitter, and was efficiently helped by BROCK PETERSON, Principal Solution Architect @ BLUEMEDORA and his team.
He wrote a blog about it to help me.

Quick Overview of the Custom Dashboard:

  1. Create a Custom list view with Presentation as List and Data as “Total IOPs”.
  2. Made the Sort order as “Descending” in the List view itself.
  3. Created a new dashboard with Object list widget feeding input to Advanced relationship (optional) and view widget created for vSphere storage as input and output for custom list view.

this worked amazingly for me, after completion i noticed my requirement was not complete. I was missing trend of the most active VMs.

Hence, ended up adding another VM trend view in the dashboard taking feed from list of the VM widget.

End results looks like this.

Hope this helps you as well.
