Home Lab for VMware based Cloud

I switched my job in March 2020, right in the middle of pandemic with lot of excitement for my new endeavour.

During pandemic, i thought the best way to utilize my spare time is to build my new home lab which will help me to explore new products/features of VMware and some other technologies as well.

I would recommend you also to plan properly before starting this project for requirements and budget!
As things can go out of control very quickly in my experience 😛

Requirements:

Products i wanted to deploy are:
– vSphere with vSAN
– NSX for vSphere as of now but NSX-T is for sure in near future
– VMware Cloud Director
– vROPs and vROPs Tenant App
– vRealize Orchestrator
– Runecast for Automated insights for vCenter

Hardware BOM:
– Dell Power Edge T620 with 128 GB RAM.

– Synology 920 Plus with 2 drives SATA drives of 7.2 TB each.

Budget:

As i said, controlling the requirements is very important. I overspent on Synology 920 Plus as it was latest in 4 bay segment. But no regrets, performance is amazing.
In total, i spent approximately 2200 $.

In near future it looks like i have to start hunting for more RAM. 🙂
