Converge vCenter with External PSC to vCenter with Embedded PSC (vSphere 6.7 U2 or above)

Continuing the last post, now we will be converging vCenter Server with External PSC to vCenter server with Embedded PSC using vSphere Client.
We can still use the scripted procedure which was available in vSphere 6.7 U1 but for the ease of demonstration i am using vSphere 6.7 U2 with vSphere client (GUI).

Important Notes and Prerequisites:

  • If using vCenter Server High Availability, disable prior to starting converge or upgrade itself.
  • If using File-Based Backup scheduler with VC or PSC, disable it else the convergence process will fail.
  • Change the DRS automation level to partially automated or Manual to avoid unnecessary false alerts.
  • Make a list of all the other solutions which are using PSC for authentication as they will be required to re-register after the convergence completes and before decommissioning of old PSC.
  • The converge process will handle PSC HA load balancers, make sure you point to the VIP address.

Procedure of Converge:

Step 1: Login to vCenter server using Https://IP_address/ui
Navigate to Menu -> Administration -> Deployment -> System Configuration
Select the vCenter server and click “Converge to Embedded

Step 2: Following inputs will be required:

  • Restart warning (as i have only 1 PSC i will lose my connection to vCenter)
  • Provide credentials for SSO user
  • Choose to Join or Skip Active Directory (i choose to join the AD as my PSC was already added to AD)
  • Provide credentials for AD
  • Accept the acknowledgment and start Converge.

Above you must notice that the convergence resulted into downtime, as i don’t have any PSC replication partner which resulted into loss of connectivity to vCenter.
After some time, the login page came back and the status is changed of the vCenter.

Confirmation:

Change over:

Before decommissioning the OLD PSC, i would recommend to re-point other products like NSX to New PSC.

Decommission old PSC:

Step 1: Login to vCenter server using Https://IP_address/ui
Navigate to Menu -> Administration -> Deployment -> System Configuration
Select the Old PSC and click “Decommission PSC

Step 2: Following inputs will be required:

  • Select the PSC port as default 443 and view the thumbprint (if in case it fails, just logout and login again)
  • Provide credentials for SSO user
  • Accept the acknowledgment and start Decommission.

Confirmation:

Login to vCenter server using Https://IP_address/ui
Navigate to Menu -> Administration -> Deployment -> System Configuration
The OLD PSC is removed from the System configuration and VM is also deleted from VC inventory.

Hope this helps.
